Are you sleeping on the right pillow ?

Do you wake with a sore or tight neck? Do you wake up with headaches? Do you wake up feeling you have not had a good sleep? Then it may be time to look for a new pillow.

Choosing the correct pillow is a very important decision and needs to be tailored to you and your needs. It is important to have a pillow that is designed to support your head and neck in a neutral position aligned with the rest of your spine. Commonly people pick pillows that are either too high or too low for their neck and place it in incorrect spinal position throughout the night. This can lead to neck and back problems that can also result in headaches and pain in the neck when waking up. Incorrect height pillows can also interrupt our quality of sleep, as we continually need to adjust our sleeping position to get comfortable. With the right pillow there will be no space between your neck and pillow to prevent incorrect spinal posture.  Your head and neck will also be supported throughout the night stopping the continual waking up and changing position so you wake up having a good sleep and feeling refreshed.

It is also important when choosing the correct pillow to pick one that is appropriate for your frame. If you are smaller framed you will not need a firm pillow compared to a larger framed person or people with broader shoulders.  You could also consider a pillow that is size adjustable, this is a great way of choosing what pillow height is comfortable for you. Lastly keep track of how old your pillow is. Pillows should be replaced every 18 months to ensure they are still offering the correct support.

So how can you make sure you make the right choice in pillow? Instead of using the hit and miss technique until you find one you like seek advice from a healthcare professional with knowledge in this field. This can help take the guess work out of buying a pillow. Another benefit is if they stock pillows themselves they can observe your body position and make adjustments and recommendations based on what they see.

Here at Elevate Health Care we have a pillow fitting station and a range of pillows available for you to try. Both our Chiropractor and reception staff are trained in how to fit the correct pillow. So instead of trailing around from store to store unsure of which pillow to choose come down to Elevate Health Care and take the stress out of getting a pillow.

Why see a Chiropractor?

If you haven’t visited a chiropractor before, you might be missing out on the incredible benefits millions of people around the world have experienced. On the other hand some of you may visit a chiropractor occasionally when those aches and pains appear. You may also be missing out on the maximal potential benefit of chiropractic care. It is important to ensure your visits are regular and continue even when you don’t feel any pain complaints.  To understand why regular care is important you need to understand what chiropractic care can do for you and your body.

There are many misconceptions about chiropractic practices and the benefits associated with it. Essentially, the basic principle upon which the profession is built is that the body has the innate ability to heal itself, under the right conditions. It is the job of the chiropractor to facilitate this by creating the right environment within the body; they do this by working on the spinal column. The spinal column itself is an amazing structure. It is composed of bones called vertebra through which nerves pass and branch out to supply the rest of the body. These nerves are what make up the nervous system that controls every cell and organ in your body. If one of these vertebrae becomes misaligned pressure is placed on the nerves and this can cause irritation and pain anywhere in the body.  Vertebrae can become misaligned for many reasons some of the most common are slips or falls, poor posture, joint swelling caused by degeneration, inflammatory response caused by poor diet, low water intake of stress or tight muscles in the back that pull vertebrae out of place.  You may not know if you have vertebrae misaligned and this may go untreated for a long period of time. This can mean years of your body working ineffectively before you do anything about it. This is why regular visits are important to ensure the effective functioning of the body.  Particularly if you suffer from back pain, headaches, neck pain, joint pain, asthma, frozen shoulder, scoliosis or blood pressure problems regular chiropractic care can help relieve these issues and reduce or prevent their reoccurrence.

Your body is a machine that requires maintenance and care, and the spine is fundamental part of the body. As a result it is vital that we receive regular chiropractic care to promote overall health and wellness and prevent sickness and pain
